Asphalt Tile Roof Cleaning NJ

Have you ever wondered where those ugly streaks or stains on your roof come from and why they look so bad on certain sides? Those stains are actually a living form of algae which feed on the limestone filler used to add weight to asphalt shingles. The reason the stains are more visible on the north side and shaded areas of your roof is because these areas receive the least amount of sunlight. Lack of sunlight means moisture from morning dew and rain remain on these areas longer, creating the perfect environment for maximum growth.

The Roof Stain Cleaning Process

The first step to cleaning a roof is to presoak the roof with water to prevent the shingles from absorbing too much of the detergent. Although this will not harm the shingles, it may cause some shingles to clean unevenly.

The second step is to apply a detergent to the areas that need to be cleaned. This detergent loosens up the soil and prepares it for removal. If the entire roof is dirty, then we apply it to the entire roof. Sometimes, just one side of the roof is dirty, so we will only clean the side that is dirty.

The third step is to use a piece of equipment specifically designed for roof cleaning. We use a roof cleaner that emits low pressure, hot water at a consistent distance from the shingles and at a right angle to them. This machine is custom made and uniformly cleans the surface with even, low pressure. The hot water, (coming from our trailer), virtually melts all of the soil away and leaves you with a near to new roof.

The fourth step is to clean areas of the roof that are not reachable by our equipment with a traditional wand.
The last step is to rinse the roof off with hot water to wash away any remaining detergent.

It can be dangerous to be up on a roof so our employees utilize harnesses and “tie off” to fixed objects like chimneys, trees, or our trucks. Safety is a very high priority at Terraclean.

We are a fully licensed and insured company.

What not to do:

Unfortunately, many people think that all you have to do is go up on a roof and blast away the soil with a power washer.

Although this procedure will remove some dirt, it is extremely damaging to your roof shingles. The high pressure weakens the shingles and in many cases, cracks the shingles. As a result, you may void your roof warranty, shorten the life of the shingle, create unsightly shingles, and even experience leaks in your roof. Another drawback to this procedure is that it is inevitable that the operator will blast water up underneath the shingle and get water under the shingle which may end up in your house.
